Creative Learning for Active Citizenship - Artists and the urchins

a creative learning and civic education project in which a classroom under the patronage of artists transforms a public space around the school

Characteristics of the project

The project was financially supported by the European Union through the National Restoration Plan and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.

The interest of young people in public events has been low for a long time. Political parties cannot get it started, and there is usually no time for it at school. So we decided to engage art!

The project takes place in 4 schools or classes. 2 artists and one experienced Agora CE lecturer work with each class. After getting to know each other, the lecturers and artists discuss with the students what one imagines a public space to be, what it should be for and who it should serve and what it should look like. Then the class will choose a public space around the school that they want to turn into a nicer, more pleasant and functional place. They then create a vision and visualisation with the help of artists, write and draw a plan and get started.

The goal is to guide the class through the process of transforming a public space, using traditional and non-traditional methods of planning, decision-making and implementation, and to involve the artistic disciplines in the transformation.

Throughout the transformation, the art-teaching team is mindful of working with the collective, developing imagination, and fostering students’ individual skills and talents.

Target group

The main target group is students of secondary schools outside Prague, where we expect fewer opportunities to participate in similar projects. However, the project also aims to increase the competences of the artists and lecturers involved. They will use the acquired experience in further pedagogical practice and expand their opportunities on the labour market.
