School of Active Citizenship and Systemic Changes in Civic Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Partner: Association of Election Officials in Bosnia and Herzegovina (AEOBiH)

Bosnia and Herzegovina can be characterized by a low level of democratic awareness. Political rhetoric based on representation in government according to the principle of nationality has created a situation that leads to an increase in hatred towards citizens belonging to a different ethnicity. The transformation of society is a long-term matter and begins with the civic education of the younger generation. The aim of the project is therefore to increase the participation of young people in public life. At the same time, changes in approach and methodology need to be made in current civic education in order to make young people more active. The project will therefore bring a proposal for changes in the educational system.

The project has two main parts:

“School of Active Citizenship” – comprehensive education for secondary school teachers and students and
Systematic work with institutions responsible for changes in civic education.
During the project, a “School of Active Citizens” will be organized for 45 students and 15 teachers from 15 secondary schools. Subsequently, students will organize debates in their schools and implement small community projects. Progressive educational materials will be actively shared with all secondary schools in BiH. At the same time, lobbying will be carried out at the regional and national levels for systematic changes and a video will be created. The arguments will be based on the document Engagement strategy to better Civic education in BiH, which the partners jointly created in 2021.

The project is supported by the Transition program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.
